Why is it that couples tend to ';merge'; so to speak?

Example: Mike has catch phrases that he uses. His girlfriend Jan unconsciously uses them after three months of being together. Jan has a few bad habits that Mike seems to have caught as well.

Why is it that couples tend to become one?

Is it a bad thing? Or is it suggesting that the couple will work out in the future? Why is it that couples tend to ';merge'; so to speak?
it's not a bad thing. it's like if you move to another place with a different accent... eventually you catch the accent. couples spend so much time with each other that they rub off on eachother. it's a nice thing, that shouldn't be taken too far.Why is it that couples tend to ';merge'; so to speak?
People ';tend to become one'; because that's what's most often strived-for in a relationship. It's the quintessential reason for being with another.. It only makes sense that they would adopt some of the ways of each other, as this is indicative of an understanding, acceptance, and adoption of the others ways, and under ideal circumstances would be taken as a compliment..

Where the problem lays is what to do with all that's been ';adopted'; after the couple's relationship has been dissolved...
Pretty cool! I love it when I hear my wife use my words when she's talking to other people. I believe it comes from being together constantly.
